Smiths Epoxy Clean Up Solvent is the perfect epoxy solvent to remove almost any uncured epoxy product. It’s special formulation completely removes epoxy resins from surfaces.
Use it with CPES, Oak and Teak Epoxy and our Fill-It flexible waterproof filler. It completely removes the uncured resins from unwanted areas and tools. You cannot remove cured resins with any solvents.
Our new formulation for 2021 evaporates slower than the previous formulation. This offers a longer working time and less loss to evaporation.
Epoxy Clean Up Solvent – FAQ
Why do I need a special Epoxy Solvent?
Epoxy resins are particularly tricky to remove completely. Single solvents, and acetone is regularly recommended, can’t completely remove epoxy resins from surfaces. Our epoxy solvent is specifically designed to completely remove uncured epoxy resins from surfaces. Only a specifically designed blend of solvents can do this.
Can I get away without a special epoxy solvent?
It depends on the task at hand really:
- If you are cleaning tools, let’s say a pair of filler knives, after mixing our epoxy filler; then you can certainly use old rags, elbow grease and solvents you have to hand
- If you are trying to achieve a natural finish on interior timber, having sealed it with our penetrating epoxy sealer, then you really need the correct solvent
- If you are thinning Epoxy Paints then you really should use a specialised solvent
How to use Epoxy Solvent
To completely remove uncured epoxy resins from a surface:
- Remove bulk resin with a dry cloth (or strong wipe)
- Wet a clean piece of cloth with Smiths Epoxy Clean Up Solvent
- Clean the surface by wiping with the epoxy solvent soaked rag
- Dispose of tainted cloth, and restart at 2. Repeat till the surface has no traces of Epoxy resin left
Uses of Epoxy Solvent Smiths ECS
It may be used to remove Smiths or any other manufacturers uncured epoxies.
Clean brushes or equipment after use (though we recommend disposable brushes).
Clean syringes or pumps used when injecting resins.
Keep brushes useable between applications of CPES or bulk epoxies. Simply storing the brush in a solution which consists predominately of ECS will slow the epoxy curing. Thus the brush remains useable for an extended period.
Thinning Epoxy Paints: Unlike acetone our epoxy solvent will not weaken the chemical bonds when used to thin epoxy paints.
Achieving a natural wood finish. To treat timber with Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer and still retain a natural look you must use Smiths Epoxy Clean Up Solvent. This technique involves removing bulk resin from the surface of the timber. This has to be done before it has cured in order to achieve a satin or matt finish as desired. Full details on the required procedure for getting a natural surface to sealed wood are here. Rest assured this technique is very fast and easy, typically taking less time than a single coat of varnish, and you can achieve a stunning natural result.
The beautiful matted finish, showing lots of detail and grain, in the oak doors above was realised in just over an hour using one coat of Smiths CPES and our Epoxy Solvent – ECS.
